Smat is a restaurant serving Qatari cuisine, seeking to provide an authentic dining experience at the Orient Pearl.
Smat’s menu is heavily inspired by Qatar’s culture and heritage. Using local ingredients and spices as much as possible, particularly local fish and lamb, Smat provides authentic Qatari flavours to diners. The restaurant features intricate interior design, looking to incorporate traditional Qatari décor to add to the authentic dining experience.
Much of the menu is vegetarian, but there are still plenty of meat and fish options. The extensive menu allows diners to explore much of the local cuisine. Smat serves breakfast daily, with dishes including tannour, an Arabic flatbread, with various toppings including caramelised onions and fava beans in traditional spices. Other options include shakshuka, omelettes, and a twist on eggs Benedict, in Dakous sauce with tomato and aloe vera cream.
On the dinner menu, appetisers include samboussa stuffed with a variety of fillings, different flavoured hummuses and notably sushi made with Qatari flavours and ingredients, including maki rolls stuffed with green mango in a pomegranate dressing. The main menu features dishes such as Mathawi macaroni with minced meat, tomato sauce and aubergine, served with bechamel sauce, and salt-baked sea bass with saffron and lemon sauce. Desserts include pistachio cheesecake and crème brulee flavoured with saffron and cardamom.
Smat would make a great first venture into Qatari food for visitors to the nation, or a venue for locals to enjoy familiar favourites.
